HISTORY
MESA membership is comprised of elevator consultants, elevator contractors, inspectors, elevator industry vendors, building owners, the Elevator Board of Regulations for the Commonwealth and those interested in the elevator field. There is no other group of this type in the area where representatives from the consulting firms working in Massachusetts, the Board of Elevator Regulations, and representatives from many of the Commonwealth’s elevator companies come together on a regular basis.
The Association designed this site to keep interested parties up to date on various elevator industry and elevator Code happenings in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and provide an open forum for all things elevator.
Originally founded as the Massachusetts Elevator Inspectors Association in 1954, a group of inspectors interested in promoting consistency of inspection techniques, congruent Codes and Code use within the Commonwealth began regular meetings.
At that time, each city or town could adopt and enforce any elevator Code as it saw fit. At one point, it is said, there were over 200 different interpretations of the elevator Code across the Commonwealth.
As late as 1987, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts took over all elevator inspections being performed by local cities and towns, creating a more uniform and consistent system of inspections and approval. This system remains in place today where the Department of Public Safety employs the inspectors and manages the inspections of all vertical transportation systems within the Commonwealth.

BENEFITS
There are numerous benefits to participating in MESA. There is no other venue where such a diverse group of people involved directly in the elevator industry come together within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. From a knowledge perspective, Code discussions with the people who design the Code in Massachusetts, networking with members of the industry’s consulting community, access to the annual G. Gahr Finney Memorial Scholarship, and contact with elevator contractors working in Massachusetts, as well as the informative monthly presentations about new products, vendors, Code updates and industry trends are immeasurable benefits gained from the Association. Additionally, you will be invited to participate in the Annual Golf Outing and Boat Cruise. Your company membership provides you with 2 paid lunches per month, so come join us!
